The transcontinental telegraph was completed on Oct. 24, 1861, when the Overland Telegraph Company's line reached Salt Lake City, days after the Pacific Telegraph Company finished the eastern section. That evening Brigham Young wrote the first telegram sent from Salt Lake City to San Francisco. Messages could now cross the country far faster than the Pony Express.
