Snow-covered peaks and ski runs at Snowbird in Little Cottonwood Canyon
Ski Utah · Little Cottonwood Canyon

Snowbird

Big, steep and snowy, Snowbird climbs 3,000 vertical feet from a concrete base village to Hidden Peak, with a 125-passenger tram, the open bowl of Mineral Basin and one of the longest seasons in the West.

Snow report

The mountain report links to snowfall, lift and trail status, webcams and a separate weather forecast.

Snow readings and their last-updated time are on the operator’s site. Live snow totals are not currently displayed on this page.

How to read a snow report
24-hour / 48-hour snowfall
New snow over the stated reporting window. The 48-hour total includes the 24-hour window; don’t add them together.
Base depth
Snow on the ground at the resort’s reporting location, which can differ from conditions elsewhere on the mountain.
Season snowfall
Snow accumulated over the season’s reporting period, rather than the depth currently on the ground.
Forecast
A prediction of future snow, separate from measured snowfall. Snowfall alone does not establish which lifts or trails are open.

Use the source’s update date and time zone, especially around overnight storms. Off-season or stale reports may retain old readings. A missing or undated report does not mean no snow.

Report links checked (Utah, America/Denver). This is a link check, not the time of a snow observation.

Snowbird is the mountain that Utah experts measure themselves against. The Aerial Tram, running since 1971, lifts 125 people at a time from the base to Hidden Peak in about ten minutes, and from the top you can drop into Cirque Traverse, Great Scott or the steep chutes of Gad Valley. Nearly half the terrain is rated advanced or expert, and the snow comes in the same storms that make Alta famous.

Over the back side, Mineral Basin is a huge sunny bowl with wide intermediate runs and the connection to Alta. The base village is built in poured concrete in the Brutalist style of the 1970s, with The Cliff Lodge and its rooftop spa as the centerpiece. Many springs, Snowbird is still spinning lifts in May, and in good years well into late spring.

Snowbird welcomes snowboarders, but riders cannot cross into Alta. The Alta-Bird ticket covers both mountains for skiers.

Maps and mountain orientation

Compare the front side and Mineral Basin before choosing a lift. A drawn connection to Alta does not extend snowboard access into Alta or guarantee that the connection is operating.

Choose your arrival plan

For 2026–27, Snowbird still offers free first-come parking in several lots, including the Main Lot and west of Creekside. Upper Gad Valley uses reservations before 1 p.m., with one free rolling reservation at a time for eligible Snowbird passholders aged 19 and older; Ikon and Mountain Collective passes do not qualify for that free benefit. Release dates were still to be announced when checked, so confirm that reservations are available before planning around one. Lower Gad Valley and Pond have separate preferred-pass/reservation rules before 1 p.m. Check lot occupancy on the Mountain Report before driving up Little Cottonwood Canyon.

Ski Utah links checked October 18, 2026; each resort map shows its own check date. We link to the resorts' own maps and do not reproduce them. Map editions may differ from current operations; check the resort’s report for open lifts and trails. Terrain ratings are relative to each ski area.

Known for

  • The 125-passenger Aerial Tram
  • Steep chutes and cliffy expert terrain
  • Mineral Basin
  • One of Utah’s longest ski seasons
  • The Cliff Lodge

Good to know

  • Snowbird mixes free first-come lots with paid and reserved parking. On powder weekends the free lots fill early, so arrive before the lifts open or take the bus.
  • UTA ski buses serve Snowbird’s four entries from the valley and are free for Ikon and many Cottonwood season passholders.
  • Little Cottonwood Canyon has a single road with no other way out. Traction-device rules are enforced in storms, and avalanche control can close SR-210 for hours.
  • When avalanche danger is high, the resort and the Town of Alta may call Interlodge, keeping guests inside buildings until it lifts.
  • Ride the tram early or late. Lines peak mid-morning, and Peruvian Express plus the Peruvian Tunnel (a moving carpet through the ridge) are a fast way into Mineral Basin.
