Lone Peak stands on the Wasatch crest at the Salt Lake–Utah county line. The Utah Geological Survey gives its elevation as 11,253 feet.

Its summit cirque is cut into quartz monzonite, a granitic rock of the Oligocene-age Little Cottonwood stock, which cooled underground long before glaciers carved the basin. Lone Peak Wilderness, designated in 1978, is older than its Wasatch neighbors and is managed by the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. The peak draws both strenuous hikes and technical climbs.
