Delano Peak

A summit in the volcanic Tushar Mountains, and mountain goat country.

Delano Peak stands on the Beaver–Piute county line in the Tushar Mountains, in Fishlake National Forest. Utah state history material lists 12,173 feet, while Fishlake National Forest, which calls it the forest's highest point, currently gives 12,169. The Skyline–Big John Flat trailhead sits in a meadow at the base and leads onto the Skyline National Recreation Trail, which is closed to motor vehicles. The Forest Service recommends four-wheel drive on the single-lane dirt road in and says there is no drinking water at the trailhead.

The Tushars are part of the Marysvale volcanic field. A rock unit is named for the peak: the Delano Peak Tuff, which USGS research ties to eruptions that formed the Big John caldera on the range's west side about 23 to 22 million years ago. A 2005 Utah Geological Survey map describes it as a resistant, crystal-rich, densely welded ash-flow tuff: the deposit of a hot cloud of gas and ash that settled hot enough for its particles to fuse together. The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources identifies the area around Delano Peak and Mount Holly as core mountain goat habitat.
