Grandeur Peak stands above the mouth of Mill Creek Canyon on the Wasatch front. The Utah Geological Survey's Mill Creek guide and the Forest Service map both give 8,299 feet.

Survey cross sections through the peak show folded sedimentary rock, and Weber Quartzite is exposed along lower Mill Creek. The Forest Service route starts at Church Fork in Mill Creek Canyon. Lower trailheads on the west side mix county open space with national forest land, and the Bonneville Shoreline Trail runs along the base.
