The museum is part of the University of Utah and is housed in the Rio Tinto Center, a building on the foothills overlooking the Salt Lake Valley. Its exhibits cover dinosaurs, geology, plants and animals, and the people of the region.

It is also a research museum, with scientific collections and work in paleontology, archaeology, botany and other fields beyond what is in the galleries. Temporary exhibitions and public programs change through the year.
