Businesses and Pacific Islander community work

Verona Mauga operates My Choice Utah and Sagato Bakery and Cafe, according to her House Democratic caucus biography. It describes a professional background in mental and behavioral health and work co-founding Le Malu, an initiative supporting Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander voices. The biography also connects her upbringing in Hawaii and West Valley City with her later community service on Utah's west side. [3]

District 31 in the House

Mauga began House service in January 2025 and represents District 31 in Salt Lake County. Her caucus identifies West Valley City and Taylorsville within the district. The official roster lists her profession as business owner and executive director and her current standing assignments as Economic Development and Workforce Services and Judiciary, combining commercial and employment concerns with questions about law and the justice system. [1] [3]

Food-safety manager certification

Mauga sponsored 2026 HB172, Food Safety Manager Certification Amendments, with Todd Weiler as Senate sponsor. The introduced proposal would extend the renewal period for food-safety manager certification from three years to five. It supplies a focused example of legislation concerning food-business operations, a subject relevant to her own restaurant-sector experience. The proposal's initial text is distinct from an assessment of food safety at any particular establishment. [2]

In the 2026 General Session, Verona Mauga was chief sponsor of H.B. 34, Victim Rights Amendments. It has the director of the State Commission on Criminal and Juvenile Justice name a coordinator for the victim rights committees, sets that coordinator's duties, revises the complaint process, and requires criminal justice agencies to give the coordinator their policies for handling complaints. The governor signed it on March 25, 2026. [4]

In the 2026 General Session, Verona Mauga was chief sponsor of H.B. 87, Animal Crime Victim Amendments. It changes how an animal seized in an animal abuse case is placed. The governor signed it on March 25, 2026. [5]

Community development and legal-policy responsibilities

Her current record lists Economic and Community Development Appropriations and interim committees for Judiciary and Political Subdivisions. Those assignments add program funding, legal-policy review and local-government questions to her standing committee portfolio. Her caucus biography identifies support for small businesses and economic opportunity as priorities; the official assignments show the legislative bodies through which she considers related policy and spending questions.
