Law and teaching
Todd Weiler earned a bachelor's degree in business and a law degree from Brigham Young University. His Senate biography identifies his practice at Christensen & Jensen, with work in business law, general litigation and family law. It also records adjunct teaching at BYU's J. Reuben Clark Law School and the University of Utah's S. J. Quinney College of Law. [1]
Woods Cross to the Senate
Weiler served on the Woods Cross City Council before joining the Senate in 2012. He represents District 8, which includes parts of Davis and Salt Lake counties and communities such as Bountiful, West Bountiful, Woods Cross and North Salt Lake. His official biography identifies him as Senate parliamentarian, a legislative leadership responsibility separate from his legal practice. [1]
Courts and confirmation work
The Senate biography identifies Weiler as chair of the Judiciary, Law Enforcement, and Criminal Justice Committee, the Judicial Confirmation Committee and the Veterans and Military Affairs Commission. His current roster also lists Business and Labor, Senate Rules and social-services and general-government budget assignments. These place court organization, public safety, appointments, business regulation and spending within his working portfolio; they do not imply support for every proposal heard by those bodies. [1] [2]
In the 2026 General Session, Todd Weiler was chief sponsor of S.B. 19, Digital Evidence Amendments. It requires local law enforcement agencies to have access to mobile device forensics, by providing their own, by sharing through an agreement with another entity, or by supporting the Regional Computer Forensics Laboratory, and allows access to that laboratory in certain circumstances. The governor signed it on March 23, 2026. [4]
In the 2026 General Session, Todd Weiler was chief sponsor of S.B. 38, Consumer Protection Modifications. It renumbers and reorganizes the code on consumer protection, credit services, charitable solicitations and health spa services. The governor signed it on March 17, 2026. [5]
A withdrawn judicial proposal
In its statement on the 2026 session, the Utah State Bar thanked Weiler for deciding not to advance S.B. 308, Judicial District Amendments. The Bar said it wanted continued collaboration on future court proposals. That is a documented example of a measure being withdrawn rather than enacted. The statement represents the Bar's response as a participant in the debate, not a judicial ruling on the proposal. [3]
