Accounting and Utah roots

Tina Cannon was born in Box Elder County and lives in Mountain Green. She graduated from the School of Accountancy in Utah State University’s Jon M. Huntsman School of Business. Her professional preparation in accounting preceded her work in the state auditor’s office, where she became involved in examining government finances and tax administration before seeking statewide office. [1]

Experience within the office

Cannon joined the Office of the State Auditor in 2022 and became deputy state auditor in 2024. Her early work included Utah’s property-tax audit system. She took office as Utah’s twenty-sixth state auditor on January 6, 2025, becoming the first woman elected to that position. Her biography emphasizes financial transparency and taxpayers’ access to information about government spending. [1]

Independent financial oversight

The auditor’s published responsibilities include assessing financial operations, compliance with law and government performance across state and local entities. The office also develops interactive transparency tools and examines compliance with personal-privacy requirements. Its work combines audit reports with public access to financial information, giving residents and public officials resources for understanding how government organizations handle money. [2]

Constitutional and statutory role

Utah elects the state auditor directly to a four-year term. The office identifies Article VII, Section 15 of the Utah Constitution and Title 67, Chapter 3 of state law as its governing authority. Its statutory role calls for independence from the state’s executive and administrative officers. That structure frames Cannon’s responsibilities when reviewing agencies and public accounts. [2]
