Sheldon Stewart grew up in West Jordan and Riverton and graduated from Bingham High School. His education includes associate degrees in environmental science and business management, a finance bachelor’s degree from the University of Utah and an MBA in global management. His career has included banking, software and health care, and his county biography identifies current work as a bank executive. [1] [3]
Municipal and county experience
Before representing District 5 on the Salt Lake County Council, Stewart served on the Riverton City Council and as mayor pro tempore. His civic experience includes leadership of South Valley Services, a nonprofit assisting people affected by domestic violence, and service with the Unified Fire Authority. He has also organized outdoor activities with young people in the southwest valley. [1]
Fire authority oversight
Stewart’s county biography describes his service as Unified Fire Authority board chair during a leadership transition. It identifies work with the state auditor, fire chief and finance committee on issues raised in an audit. The same biography connects his municipal and county service to the challenges of growth in southwest Salt Lake County, including the needs of rapidly changing communities. [1]
County leadership in 2026
Stewart was selected as council vice chair for 2026. The county’s January announcement places him on the leadership team with chair Aimee Winder Newton and chair pro tempore Dea Theodore. That assignment adds councilwide leadership to his District 5 role. It follows his experience in municipal government, public-safety governance and financial management in the private sector. [2]
