Education and research

Quinn Mecham studied comparative literature at Brigham Young University and earned a doctorate in political science at Stanford University. His career has focused on teaching and research about government, including courses in comparative government at BYU. In Orem’s profile, he explains an interest in the conditions that allow people to thrive and the harm caused when public institutions function poorly. [1]

School and community service

Mecham describes making a commitment years ago to devote part of his time to community service. That involvement included church assignments, youth recreation and elected school-board service while his children were young. He later took an administrative role at BYU before running for Orem City Council in 2025. He sees those experiences as different ways to contribute to public institutions and support the community where his family lives. [1]

Participation and community identity

Mecham’s research has examined what makes people feel attached to their communities. He wants to apply those insights by increasing opportunities for residents to participate, including people who have not traditionally been active in civic affairs. His city interview identifies Orem’s university, parks, businesses, service culture and municipal workforce as strengths. He also hopes that his own involvement will help students see practical examples of public service. [1]

Current responsibilities

Orem lists Mecham’s first council term as 2026–2030. His assignments include the Audit Committee and the CARE, Cultural Arts, Library and Planning advisory or governing bodies. [2]
