Construction and ranching

Mike Schultz grew up in Weber County and built a working life in construction and agriculture before entering state politics. The House's biography describes early work on cattle and dairy farms, hauling hay and roofing houses. He later became a general contractor and operated small businesses, including a homebuilding company he stepped away from in 2023. The same biography identifies a family ranch in Croydon as his continuing business activity. [1]

From District 12 to speaker

Schultz began representing House District 12 in 2015 and became speaker in November 2023. His House biography connects that political base to Hooper, Roy and West Haven. As of this review, the Legislature's member record identifies him as a Republican representing a district spanning Davis and Weber counties. His leadership position sits alongside a district representative's responsibilities rather than replacing them. [1] [2]

Water, classrooms and growth

In his January 20, 2026 opening-day address, Schultz framed housing costs, childcare, school quality and time spent in traffic as household concerns that should guide the session. He called for long-range attention to the Great Salt Lake, energy, land management and critical minerals. Those remarks describe his priorities and arguments for investment; they do not establish that a particular project has been funded or completed. [3]

In the 2026 General Session, Mike Schultz was chief sponsor of H.B. 274, Sentencing Amendments. It changes who sits on the Sentencing Commission, directs the commission to weigh stated objectives and revise its adult sentencing and supervision guidelines for certain offenses before November 1, 2026, and adjusts how courts consider factors at sentencing. The governor signed it on March 24, 2026. [4]

Budget and oversight work

His official assignments include Executive Appropriations, House Business, Labor, and Commerce, and House Natural Resources, Agriculture, and Environment. He also serves on Legislative Management, the Legislative Audit Subcommittee and the Subcommittee on Oversight. Together, those assignments connect budget decisions, business regulation and resource policy with review of how state agencies operate. Specific sponsorships and floor votes remain separate records from these committee memberships. [2]
