Legal education and clerkships
Mike Lee studied political science at Brigham Young University, served as student body president and graduated from BYU’s law school in 1997. His early legal training included clerkships for federal district judge Dee Benson and Samuel Alito on the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. He later returned to clerk for Alito after Alito joined the U.S. Supreme Court. [1]
Practice and public service
Before his Senate election in 2010, Lee practiced appellate and Supreme Court litigation at Sidley & Austin, served as an assistant U.S. attorney in Salt Lake City and worked as general counsel to Governor Jon Huntsman. He returned to private practice in 2007. His official biography describes constitutional limits and individual liberties as central themes of his Senate work. [1]
Energy and federal lands
Lee chairs the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee. The committee’s portfolio includes public lands, water resources, territories and federal leasing for coal, oil, gas and minerals. That assignment gives him a leadership role in legislation and oversight involving resources and federal land management, issues with particular relevance to Utah’s extensive federally managed acreage. [2]
Judiciary and other assignments
Lee also serves on Judiciary, Foreign Relations and Budget. He chairs Judiciary’s antitrust, competition policy and consumer rights subcommittee and a Foreign Relations subcommittee covering multilateral institutions and international economic, energy and environmental policy. Judiciary work includes judicial nominations and federal justice matters; the Budget Committee develops congressional budget plans and examines federal spending and revenue. [2]
