Planning and nonprofit leadership
Karen McCandless grew up in Modesto, California, and moved to Orem in 1991. Her campaign identifies a Brigham Young University geography degree with an urban and regional planning emphasis. She later led Community Action Services and Food Bank, with her campaign dating her chief-executive service from May 2017 to June 2025. That work added social-service management to her planning background. [2] [3]
Council experience and mayoral term
McCandless joined the Orem City Council in 2001 and served until 2014. Her subsequent civic work included the Utah County Planning Commission and university and community advisory groups. Her campaign describes thirteen years of prior council experience before her return to municipal office. [3]
Orem’s current roster identifies McCandless as mayor for her first mayoral term, running from 2026 to 2030. [1]
Regional challenges and stated priorities
In the city’s profile of her new administration, McCandless identifies housing affordability, transportation, air quality and funding as challenges she wants to address collaboratively. She describes those issues as extending beyond Orem and anticipates working with state lawmakers and regional partners. Her nonprofit career and interest in the social dimensions of communities form part of the background for that approach. [2]
Civic and regional involvement
McCandless’s campaign also lists service with UServeUtah, a housing nonprofit, university advisory bodies and Utah Valley’s interfaith community. Her experience includes the Utah Homelessness Council and John Curtis’s Women’s Advisory Council. These roles connect her municipal and nonprofit experience with housing, higher education, civic engagement and regional partnerships. [3]
