All votes by Jerry W Stevenson

A business rooted in Davis County

Jerry W Stevenson owns and operates J&J Nursery, according to his official Senate biography. That small-business background sits alongside decades of local and state public service. The Legislature's member record identifies his profession as business owner and lists Utah State University in his education history; it does not specify a degree, so this profile does not infer one. [1] [2]

Layton government before the Senate

Stevenson served eight years on the Layton City Council and 12 years as Layton's mayor before his appointment to the Utah Senate in January 2010. He represents District 6, including parts of Layton, Syracuse and Clearfield. His official biography identifies him as chair of Executive Appropriations, linking a local-government career with statewide budget work. [1]

Development and institutional experience

The Senate biography records work with the Military Installation Development Authority, Utah Inland Port Authority, Point of the Mountain Development Commission and Weber State trustees. It also describes earlier leadership of prison relocation and development commissions, Davis Technology College's board and Envision Utah. These are distinct institutions with separate responsibilities; participation on a board is not a claim that he personally approved every project associated with it. [1]

In the 2026 General Session, Jerry W Stevenson was chief sponsor of S.B. 132, Spaceport Amendments. It lets the Spaceport Exploration Committee meet in closed session to discuss possible trade secrets, widens the activities it may consider to include reentry operations, and pushes back the date of its required report. The governor signed it on March 17, 2026. [3]

In the 2026 General Session, Jerry W Stevenson was chief sponsor of S.B. 203, Local Option Sales Tax Amendments. It would have let some cities in second-class counties levy a local sales tax to pay for emergency services. It never reached a floor vote: a committee sent it back to the Rules Committee, and it was filed on March 6, 2026. [4]

Where to follow his budget work

Stevenson's current committee assignments include Executive Appropriations, Economic and Community Development Appropriations and Natural Resources appropriations. He also serves on Senate committees for economic development, health and natural resources, with interim health and workforce assignments. That mix places agency spending, economic strategy and resource policy within his portfolio. A budget request, committee discussion and final appropriation are different steps, so specific funding claims should be checked against the final budget measure. [2]
