Journalism and education

Jennifer Napier-Pearce grew up in Magna and earned degrees from the University of Utah and Stanford University. She spent more than two decades in journalism, including service as KUER news director and editor of The Salt Lake Tribune. That career involved leading news organizations and communicating public issues before she moved into state government and philanthropic work. [1]

State policy and philanthropy

Before joining the city council, Napier-Pearce served as senior adviser and communications director for Governor Spencer Cox. She now works as chief of staff at the George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation. Her official biography identifies experience across journalism, public policy, communications and philanthropy, spanning institutions that cover, shape and support public life in Utah. [1]

District 4 representation

Napier-Pearce’s council biography identifies her as the first Tongan-American woman to serve on the Salt Lake City Council. A longtime District 4 resident, she describes listening, transparency and empathy as commitments in representing her neighbors. Her professional background adds experience in public communication and institutional leadership to a constituency that includes Downtown and surrounding central-city neighborhoods. [1]

Appointment and term

The council appointed Napier-Pearce on June 9, 2026, following several rounds of voting, and she was sworn in immediately. The city’s announcement states that she will complete the remainder of the District 4 term ending January 3, 2028. It also identifies the 2027 municipal election as the next ballot contest for the seat. Her current service therefore began through appointment. [2]
