Trade and professional background

Dirk Burton’s professional background is in the electrical trade. West Jordan identifies him as a master electrician, National Electrical Code consultant and approved continuing education provider. His professional memberships include the International Code Council and Independent Electrical Contractors. Those roles give him experience with construction standards, technical requirements and training alongside his elected responsibilities. [1]

Council and executive service

Burton joined the West Jordan City Council in 2016, representing District 4. In January 2020, he became the city’s first mayor under its strong-mayor structure. His current official page lists a 2024–2027 term. He grew up in Kearns and later settled in West Jordan, where he raised his family and developed his involvement in municipal government. [1]

Regional and community assignments

The mayor’s biography lists regional service involving transportation, the Jordan River, economic development and local government policy. His assignments include the Wasatch Front Regional Council’s Active Transportation Committee, Utah Transit Authority advisory work and the Salt Lake County Council of Governments. He also participates in education and building-code organizations, connecting city interests with agencies and professional bodies beyond West Jordan. [1]

Recreation and communication

In his September 2026 mayoral message, Burton discusses the continuing work at Ron Wood Park and the activities planned around it. The message uses an identifiable public facility to explain recreation investments and encourage residents to participate in community life. This is an account of city work delivered through staff, contractors and elected leadership. His mayoral communications also offer residents a way to track projects between council meetings and bring questions to City Hall. [2]
