Public policy and consulting

Alejandro Puy immigrated from Argentina and earned a political-science degree at Brigham Young University. He worked to pay his way through college. His professional background includes public-policy research and campaign management. He founded Landslide Political, a local consulting company. His official council biography connects that experience with community engagement and his interest in directing investment toward Salt Lake City’s historically underserved western neighborhoods. [1]

District elections and prior leadership

Puy was first elected in November 2021 to complete a vacant term and was reelected in 2023 to a four-year term. He represents District 2, including Glendale, Poplar Grove and portions of Fairpark and Downtown. His previous leadership assignments include council vice chair and chair of the Community Reinvestment Agency board, combining district representation with citywide and redevelopment responsibilities. [1]

Westside investment and representation

Puy’s biography identifies investment in Westside neighborhoods as a continuing focus, including areas around Rio Grande and the Granary District. He emphasizes resident participation and the strengths of those communities in setting priorities. His stated approach links neighborhood engagement with public-policy decisions affecting the allocation of resources and the direction of growth in District 2. [1]

Council leadership in 2026

On January 13, 2026, the council unanimously selected Puy as chair and Erika Carlsen as vice chair. The city’s announcement identifies equitable investment, housing affordability and community engagement as his leadership interests. The appointment adds responsibility for guiding council discussions to his ongoing Westside representation. [2]
